Bamboo Countertops

I was asked a few days ago about the possibility of using Bamboo in designing kitchen and bathroom countertops.  Since the subject is very interesting, I thought of sharing this knowledge with you.

What is Bamboo?

Bamboo plants are some of the fastest growing plants in the world.  Bamboo has its significant value in South Asia.  It may be used for building materials, as a food source and as versatile raw product.  It can tolerate compression more than Wood, and can be comparable in tension to Steel!

In construction, you may find as much as entire buildings that are constructed from Bamboo or as little as a few sticks of Bamboo that are used as decoration.

Can Bamboo be used as countertops?

Absolutely!  Bamboo, is already being used as cutting boards and countertops.  Its natural beauty quickly adds spice to any space and becomes a focal point in a room.  Bamboo, as a natural material, its characteristics vary widely between species and origin of growth.  Manufacturers, like Teragren, choose carefully the type of Bamboo plant that is to be used as a countertop to ensure its durability and long life.  Installing Bamboo countertops can be a weekend DIY project, thanks to detailed installation guide.  The manufacturer may recommend different finishes and sealers to preserve the material and protect the surface against wear and tear.

Here is a video clip by DYI Network that shows installing Bamboo board as a contemporary lavatory countertop.

Finally, once the project is done, you will enjoy the nice look, durability and long life of your newly installed Bamboo countertop!
